Sounds like a product developed for cleanup of organic carbon contaminants (petroleum compounds) as an alternative to using activated carbon. It would be overwhelmed very quickly by brine with 300,000mg/L TDS. Pack filters are ineffective on seawater (30-40,000mg/L), thats why RO is used, but even standard RO maxes out at about 80k mg/L. New ultra high pressure RO does exist but even that maxes out at 130k mg/L.
