The volume is being absorbed and lower and lower prices. That means there are longs in the market who have a lot to sell, and they are not finessing the price.
You are assuming that the price action is being driven by short selling, and you have convinced yourself that there is a shortage of gold. I think that you need to reconsider those assumptions.
