This comment and the one about unlikely use of Al as a substitute miss the point.
As the price of Cu gets higher there is increased impetus to find it from any where. Any old scrap or potential scrap that was over looked before as not worth the effort. The last time in China, people wee ripping it out of new houses that weren't occupied yet. When my new water heater was put in the plumber (and I) considered how far from the wall the unit should be because of the cost of the Cu pipe and I saved an off cut.
Note before the considerations are dismissed out of hand, the overall thesis came from the Mineral Market Analysis unit by Dr Egert (guest lecturer from Colarado School of Mines) in the MSc Mineral Economics course.
