The algorithm would see the buy order before it hit the open market, and define if it was a genuine buy order. The algorithm would remove the sell order if it were part of its parameters.
I can see how these are painful in a down move or accumulation phase, however it is the same algorithms that are used to mark a price up when the time is right.
Don't try to stop it, or even understand it. It's here to stay. Just jump on its back for a ride if you can now and again...
