Because they are largely uneducated, cant speak English and there are no available jobs here for them to do. There would be at least one hundred million impoverished people among our northern neighbours who would give an arm or a leg to come to Australia and get free public housing and free welfare payments. Many Asian countries would be very happy to export their slum dwellers and religious outcasts to Australia. To these people a fortnight's welfare payment is equivalent to a year's pay collecting garbage or breaking rocks. - Consequently, let one boatload in and 1,000,000 boatloads will follow. Many will drown on the way and the rest would put our welfare costs and national debt through the roof. The only way to fix this problem is for developing countries to undertake appropriate population control measures.
