    This from your previous link, re drug companies:

    And this from the above link:
    "If we don't write the rules, China will write the rules out in that region," said Obama, "We will be shut out."

    So what is this all about?

    From the balance of trade angle, if they keep bargaining until everyone ends up happy, it basically means they have maintained the status quo. Everyone would have about the same value of trade coming in and going out as before, otherwise someone would still have a complaint. So is it about the US trying to trick us into naively giving them some future advantage?

    Or, from the second quote, is it more about putting China and Russia at a disadvantage, ie back door sanctions?

    Or both?

    Competition in international trade with whoever we like would seem to provide the best outcome, so do we need all these agreements?
