Will Eddie have to return to Australia to stand trial or will he be able to extend his compassionate leave to organise elections in Lebanon?

NSW Labor MP Eddie Obeid will be asked in parliament to explain his two-month trip to Lebanon.

The NSW opposition moved to censure Mr Obeid, accusing him of taking the leave, which was granted on compassionate grounds, to become involved in supporting a candidate in local elections.

Mr Obeid reiterated the visit was to resolve family issues but he happened to be in the country during the elections in his native village of Matrite, and was "certainly" involved in them.
