Mr Cunningham was also well-known in Western Australia's tennis scene and was awarded lifetime membership at the UWA Tennis Club in 2022.

The club shared a tribute to him on Tuesday.

'It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Tony Cunningham,' it said.

'Tony has been a long-standing member of UWA Tennis Club since his student days at The University of Western Australia and was pivotal in the resurrection of the Club in recent times.

'As President of UWA TC between 2001 and 2003, Tony was instrumental in raising the required $1.2million to fund the club's new clubhouse, car park and six clay courts.'

Mr Cunningham's tennis skills earned him a division one US scholarship to the University of Nebraska and he continued to play 'high-level tennis' once he returned home to WA.

'He held a lifelong passion for both UWA Tennis Club and Tennis in general and had sat on the Tennis West Board of Directors since 2019,' the club said.

'As a regular pennants competitor and proud supporter of the Club, we would like to acknowledge that without Tony's contributions, UWA TC would not be in the position it is now.'

Mr Cunningham studied at Coolbinia Primary School and Trinity College before The University of Western Australia.

He used his sport and social networks to successfully build a career as a stockbroker and company promoter, starting with the founding of DJ Carmichael in the early 1990s.

In 1995, Mr Cunningham bought a stake in HotCopper from founder Ron Gully and worked as a chat moderator.

He compared trading discussions on the site to 'pub conversation' that had the power to influence thousands of dollars.

'The daytraders will buy stock because that's what's being mentioned in the forums and they sell at the end of the same day,' he told The West in 1999.

HotCopper's investors turned over a nice profit when the platform was bought out by Melbourne-based Bourse data.

The website changed hands several more times before being bought back by Mr Cunningham and floated again in 2016.
