Interesting there are some highly conserved genetic sequences which are essential for development. The HOX cluster is responsible for the development of general areas like head, thorax and abdomen. There is little difference in the sequence of these genes between member of different species.

There is a difficulty in establishing past evolutionary relationships and delineating separate species based on a paucity of evidence.

And not all members of the same species have the same chromosome number.
