I traveled through China a few months ago, primarily for my own understanding of their economy and culture. Amazingly, my partner and I were shocked by what we saw, the scale was truly amazing and beyond my comprehension. Seriously, we traveled 1300km by train and the whole way was dotted with new cities half built. My partner kept pointing to all the half built cities and roads in pure shock, I personally was horrified at the magnitude. I saw many (maybe 50) eight lane highways with no traffic but a farmer, his yak and a cart. I turned to the old lady at one point and said, "Australia built all this". Her response as a smart women that's not interested in the economy or finance was extremely poignant, "this is scary, it's a wasteland, what happens when the people don't come. They can't keep building like this and they [China] won't need us anymore".
Take your rose coloured glasses off, this is real Australia and it's about to get ugly.
