The core part of Kyiv-Zaporizhia along the Dnieper was under direct rule of Tzar Russia for about 300 years. Ukraine only briefly existed in history twice for a total period of less than one hundred years. Geographically speaking the steppe is a vast area that is indefensible or at least very difficult to defend against all sides.
