Russia could be buying gold *because* of its economic situation.
Currency falling -> Increase reserves to shore it up.
Any currency except USD is dangerous. But to keep up the narrative of being Anti-US to its own citizens, it would be hugely ironic to stock up on USD reserves.
Buy gold for reserves instead.
