Just to correct 1 small point Andy :
IMO some posters might be confused by your post’s term : Abstain
which is a box that can be X’d on the Proxy Form by any shareholder lodging a Proxy.

It is a standard thing to provide on such Form – by any public company – such a box – for use by a Director or shareholder to abstain from voting his shareholding - or that of an entity’s, Trust’s, etc. shareholding over which he has indirect control - on a Resolution that financially benefits him/her personally or said entity etc.

So the example # : 50m – you have used – is more an example :

of the # of shares held by s/holders who do NOT vote at all either in person at the EGM, or by NOT lodging a Proxy Form.
