The Karlsruhe energy master plan will be presented to the public at a climate forum next Wednesday. With the help of the plan, Karlsruhe should become climate neutral from 2040.

The city of Karlsruhe wants to be climate neutral from 2040. In order to achieve this goal, a so-called energy master plan was developed. It will be presented to the public next week.

Master plan shows potential for climate-neutral energy production

There are a lot of numbers in the energy master plan, a lot of data and extensive digital maps. Karlsruhe's mayor Bettina Lisbach (Greens), responsible for the environment, nature and climate protection, speaks of a strategic instrument.

For example, the plan shows building structures, population density or the need for electricity and heat. But also potential analyzes, for example for future climate-neutral energy generation with photovoltaics or for the expansion of geothermal energy to generate heat.

The topic of photovoltaics will play a role for us and we also need geothermal energy.

Basis for further energy development in Karlsruhe

With the energy master plan, Karlsruhe is meeting the legal obligation to create municipal heat planning by the end of 2023. According to the city, the plan is intended to be used to make quick statements about the energy development of districts. It is a basis for targeted renovation campaigns. It is also intended to support owners and suppliers in developing networked solutions for energy supply.

Climate-neutral city: Energy master plan as a starting signal

According to the city, the energy master plan is the starting point for the further process towards a climate-neutral heat and energy supply in Karlsruhe. In order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality, all potential must be exploited. Photovoltaics on roofs, deep geothermal energy and geothermal probes are considered particularly promising. The district heating network, which is already dense with a share of 30 percent, is to be further expanded.

Karlsruhe energy goals can only be achieved together

In order to achieve the goals, an electricity and heat network with the Karlsruhe district and, if necessary, with the entire region should be sought. Comprehensive heating networks, for example, would be conceivable.

The energy master plan will be presented to the public on October 4th at a climate forum in the rooms of the Karlsruhe Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It is expected to be approved by the local council at the end of November
