Well they could... but these systems are mostly about performance not power savings.
you could get rid of all the RAM in your PC and just use SSDs ( flash) to save power, but the performance would suck. To replace DDR you need
- The best performance ( latency and throughput)
- near unlimited read/write cycles
- medium capacity
