Hi Jason, only there was a huge difference. In this case the umpire was in fact partially inside the field of play and the ball hit him near the left shoulder.
His left shoulder was inside the field of play. The Betts rule does apply as you said, does result in a behind as the ball would've hit the post if it wasn't for the umpire.
