Given that Toyota, GM & Ford intend to close down their
factories in early 2017, nobody has asked what is to become
of spare parts supply for existing local models given that
most of these parts were either manufactured by these
multinationals or their local suppliers who, too, will be
out of business come 2017.
Perhaps our Industry & Transport Ministers should be asked
what they intend to do to ensure ongoing spare parts support
for Falcons, Commodores & Camrys.
IMO, a scrappage program similar to European countries should
be institutes to take the old models off the road and the opening
up of used fuel efficient car import regime to replace these fuel
guzzlers . The benefits are obvious:
(a) a lowering of our annual petroleum bill
(b) an alternative of good cheap fuel efficient secondhand cars
(benefit to Aussie workers via the Japan Free Trade Deal )
(c) ready supply of parts including cheap pirate parts)
(d) the lowereing of our CO2 footprint.
(e) downward pressure on the price of new imported cars.
Of course the Multinational Auto manufacturers will loudly
object but they have deprived themselves of the only credible
agruement which was the protection of local manufacturing
due to their withdrawal from the Australian Manufacturing market.
This issue is of national economic importance nut by the level of
posting on this board about silly Evs , one wouldd think that
the broader motoring public have little or no interest in the
economic well being of Australia.
