Same Sex Marriage isn't the same as Marriage Equality.
Currently Gays and Straights can marry. Tricky thing is that marriage has always been between a Man and a Woman. Nothing stopping Gay Men and Gay Women getting married just like the rest of us.
People with a criminal conviction can marry, so can paedophiles, so politicians (just thought I would use some of the lower order members of society for the example) etc etc etc.
Adding a Sexual Preference into marriage opens the door to a whole lot more Preferences! The list is almost limitless.
Politicians having a "Conscience Vote" is akin to a Shark going Vegetarian!
