Polls may well show that. That is why we should have a plebiscite (a referendum isn't required as its not a constitutional issue) Have a poll on it and let people decide. As Hairy says above, it's not something that should be decided by 150 people in Canberra.
As for your comment about "only really old people and religious wackos" - that says more about your own bigotry and intolerance for free speech, and alternate opinions. I am neither really old nor at all religious but would vote no. It is called democracy.
