Where are those neocons? There they are – you have to look carefully – out there to the right in the far distance. Only they could use the tragedy of nearly 300 dead and the pain of thousands who lives are changed forever for the worse to push the credentials of their Don Quixote – Timid Tony. I offer the following opinions (maybe even some facts ).
1. Despite what we like to think Australia is an international minnow. We are a minor country whose political influence extends to bullying / bribing impoverished pacific nations (both sides of politics) to force them into such things as taking refugees we don’t want. Do you really think Russia gives a fig about what we say?
2. We are like a Lilliputian taking a swing at a bound Gulliver. What have we got to lose by annoying Russia? Trade? Military conflict? Vodka embargo? Merkel has to live with Russia on many levels and when Obama says something nations listen – what he says carries weight and repercussions.
3. The forum in which Australia is pressing our views is as President of the UN Security Council. This was opposed and criticised by the LNP in opposition as being a waste of money and “grandstanding”. Who is standing on that grandstand now?
So there you go neocons – keep up your vicious diatribe, twisting of facts and sly innuendo while hiding behind your anonymity but please don’t use the misery of others to prosecute your case. That would be un-Christian and - dare I say – un-Australian.
