    i also worked with one such person in the 70s and we discussed it. I was curious about this having studied Russian to bachelor level and being very familiar with the history of both Russia and the soviet union.

    they left Russia on Israeli passports. Many subsequently left Israel for other countries. At the time I felt there was something immoral about it - that they used their familial history to get out of the Soviet Union when such exodus was closed to others.
