I agree with you that governments and central banks regularly make poor investment decisions, namely because they're using other people's money. However owning gold is a lot more sensible than owning fiat which is constantly being manipulated and inflated.
Did you know that England famously sold gold at it's lowest point in 20 years? So it works both ways.
