The media spun on the Wuhan/China angle before it was labelled, as it wasn't clear what the virus was at first. It became COVID-19 in early 2020, as that's an easy way to describe it. CO = corona, VI = virus, D = disease, 19 = 2019. So yes, the media ran with the Wuhan angle for a few months.
As for the variants, again, the media used those before the actual medical scientific community could officially confirm the variants.
The Alpha variance was from the UK, Beta from South Africa, Gamma from Brazil, and now Delta from India.
