THE GAS FIRED INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY

The “gas-fired” investment opportunity in the Australian energy sector

Source: Santos

  • The global energy market crashed in 2020 as weak demand, ramped-up production, and the COVID-19 pandemic sent oil prices tumbling
  • The sector gradually recovered in the 12 months after the crash, but U.S. petrol has hit a massive supply crunch just this month after a major cyberattack against fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline
  • Yet, the Australian government has pegged the energy market as one of the catalysts for the nation's COVID-19 economic recovery
  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Energy Minister Angus Taylor have outlined a string of government measures to prop up the energy sector in coming months and years
  • On top of this, analysts like Deloitte, UBS and Goldman Sachs are all predicting rising oil prices over the next few years
  • Given the ASX energy sector is still far below its pre-pandemic glory, the energy market could present a unique opportunity to Australian investors
  • On the upper end of the market, the likes of Santos (STO) and Beach Energy (BPT) could offer relatively safe but smaller gains to investors
  • On the junior, more speculative side of the market, the likes of State Gas (GAS), Australis Oil and Gas (ATS) and ADX Energy (ADX) are on watch by investors
  • Whether ASX investors opt for safe or speculative plays, the energy market has been largely overlooked in Australia's COVID-19 market recovery so far

MEET THE LEADERS BEHIND ATS

Meet the experienced leaders with a record of success behind Australis Oil and Gas (ASX:ATS)

ASX:ATS
Real Energy (ASX:RLE) grows balance sheet ahead of drilling in Queensland

  • Transitioning from explorer to producer is a delicate feat for many oil and gas companies, but the team behind Australis Oil and Gas (ATS) has a history of success
  • The leadership at the helm of ATS previously floated Aurora Oil and Gas on the ASX and TSX, before eventually selling it for an enterprise value of $2.6 billion
  • Jon Stewart, Ian Lusted and Graham Dowland all worked as leaders at Aurora and are now using their decades of experience to build up Australis
  • The company has accumulated a major acreage position in the onshore Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) basin in Louisiana and Mississippi
  • It's estimated there are 170 million discovered and recoverable barrels of oil (bbls) at TMS, with Australis already operating 38 wells producing over 1300 bbls per day

Oil and gas development is a delicate feat: under the right guidance, a company can enjoy a seamless transition from exploration to healthy returns; under the wrong leadership, shareholders can feel left in limbo for years on end.

One notable ASX oil and gas success story is that of Aurora Oil and Gas, which went public in 2005 with a $28 million market cap.

Over the next six years, a savvy management team would build the business up to a dual listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange with a portfolio of unconventional assets in the Eagle Ford shale trend in South Texas, U.S.

Aurora eventually sold for $4 per share — or a whopping enterprise value of $2.6 billion — in 2014. Over just nine years, the Aurora management team increased the business' value almost a hundredfold in a testament to its shrewd decision making and excellent timing.

Now, that same group of leaders in the oil and gas industry are doing it all over again with Australis Oil and Gas (ATS).

With three key players from the original Aurora founders and management team building up a new oil and gas business with a fresh vision and unique assets, Australis is poised for major growth as a long-term investment.

ABOUT US

arrow-down-2 Created with Sketch.

Australis Oil & Gas Ltd. (Australis) is an oil and gas company founded with the goal of providing superior shareholder returns through the acquisition, development and monetisation of high quality unconventional upstream assets.

Formed by the founders and executives of Aurora Oil & Gas Limited (Aurora), an oil and gas company focused on unconventional onshore oil & gas exploration, development and production in the USA. Aurora went public with an initial market cap of ~A$30 million and was sold in June 2014 for an enterprise value of A$2.6 billion, including assumed debt of approximately A$800 million.

Australis has now accumulated a large strategic position within possibly the last delineated and appraised but undeveloped oil shale basins onshore in the USA, becoming the largest acreage holder in the production-defined core area of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS), onshore Louisiana and Mississippi. Independent reserve engineers have allocated a mid-case recovery resource of over 170 million barrels of oil (including ~10 million barrels of proved reserves) to the Australis TMS acreage and Australis operates 38 wells in the TMS core with non-operated interests in a further 17 wells.

The Australis board and key management are experienced with a successful track record in recognising value where others do not and in acquiring, developing, managing, financing and realising that value from oil and gas assets. The Australis position within the TMS core, with its associated production and cashflow, proven reserves and large undeveloped resource, provide the platform for significant value creation for Australis shareholders.
