"Really without too much thought from probably 125K upwards families dont really need government assistance."
The obvious thing I see is that they are working, hopefully productive for Australia's benefit.
People are broke at different levels.
GMH got a hand out to stay in business so employees could get 22% pay rise, making their product more expensive I would say.
It's a complex society we have now. In the old days, fear of starving made you work. That fear has been removed, for I see people on welfare are still buying cigarettes,so must not be hungry.
If they are not hungry they will not work.Just their mind set. These people need the hand up to become independent and wealthy, then can receive a reward in a hand out for working.
Wealthy is not a number of dollars. Wealthy will vary on individuals beliefs and wants.
A person sailing around on his yacht (home) on $ 20,000 who be happy and would consider himself wealthy and Free.
Where as a person in Sydney would need a lot more just to survive and feel trapped.
Wealthy is a state of mind, not money.
Excess Money will not make you happy, but not having enough can make you sad and depressed.
As you made the limit of 125K,these people are hungry for comfortable life style and will work, pay taxes to support the ones that won't. Giving some of their tax money back doesn't to me, seem selfish or wasteful.
Disclosure, I am retired and nowhere,I repeat, nowhere near 125K.
