CME chief executive Reg Howard-Smith said the trip was about "partnerships and collaboration". Having visited Germany late last year Mr Howard-Smith said the feedback he received was that companies wanted to engage directly with would-be producers.


The visit comes in the context of high tension over the supply of rare earths, which has become more pronounced since China began tightening its export quotas.



Because China has historically accounted for close to 95 per cent of production, other countries are concerned about being dependent on China for supply of rare earths.


Last month the US, Japan and the European Union went to the World Trade Organisation to challenge the validity of China's export restrictions.
