QR National has already pegged the rail corridor to service iron ore miners in the West Australian Pilbara region.

RAIL provider QR National says it has heads of agreement in place with several iron ore juniors as it seeks to develop a multi-user railway to service landlocked Pilbara miners.

QR confirmed yesterday it had agreed with Atlas Iron to an eight-month feasibility study into such a railway, which could belatedly provide the sort of access to port enjoyed by the likes of Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group.

While the agreement with Atlas is more advanced than the discussions with others, QR spokesman Ken Lewsey said his company had struck heads of agreement with at least two more companies.

QR has already pegged the rail corridor, which runs further south than the existing Pilbara railways and narrows on its way into Port Hedland.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett said his government would support the railway but would not commit any money to it.

News of the binding study agreement between QR and Atlas helped lift Atlas' share price by 2¢ to $2.87 yesterday.

Shares in Brockman Resources - which is also expected to benefit should such a railway materialise - also rose marginally.
