    Not sure ,it's just policy, but there are some interesting websites on Fort Knox, lots of info there on the door, the fortifications and history.

    Gold's stored at various facilities in the USA, the NY Fed(which you can visit and see thousands of tonnes of gold), the Denver Mint and San Francisco Mint.

    I spend quite a bit of time in SFO, but unfortunately that mint is not open to visitors.

    I'm not sure about paying down debt, the gold isn't a huge amount of money anyway, probably the defence budget for a year.

    Greece and Portugal own lots of gold and they're in real strife, they should be selling theirs while the prices are sky-high I reckon.

    When asked why the USA owned all the gold Ben Bernanke replied "it's tradition".
