Kevin Rudd tried to marginalise faction chiefs while at the mercy of the polls. Behind the scenes he was being marginalised in anticipation of opportunity. The peoples' choice was replaced as loyalty gave way to ambition.

Julia Gillard will not stand aside - for the factions too much is at stake & she must dread how such a move would define her political life. Rudd will not challenge, someone else would have to do so but if that happens Rudd would again be in play.

Combet has no charisma, lacks mainstream appeal & the leadership persona. IMO Penny Wong could step up to the plate as Treasurer & Anthony Albanese would make a great DPM.
