Hi thermionic thanks for the questions and thanks to jantimot for a better answer than I could possibly have given.
I've wondered myself about how the maple syrup / baking soda mix gets through the stomach acid/digestion process, and jantimot's answer is the best I've seen so far.
From the internet research I've done, they reckon it does get through and then gets into the smallest crevices in the body, however not into the bones so well.
Dingo claims that it worked for him, and others have too, but maybe it was just the bicarb at work? Hard to know I suppose. Oh and thermionic it is baking SODA not baking powder, not being picky but they are different things.
jantimot one thing though - the mix doesn't taste good at all! But I suppose it does taste better than straight bicarb :)
I had a glass of water with 1/2 a lemon and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda this morning, and it didn't taste too bad at all, quite nice actually, and it reminded me of something.
ENO!
We have some in the pantry and I had a look on the label.
Each 5g of ENO contains:
Sodium Bicarbonate 2.29g
Sodium Carbonate 0.50g (often used as a water softener for laundering, or for dyeing or descaling)
Citric Acid Anhydrous 2.16g (a dry powder form of citric acid)
So my glass of water with 1/2 a lemon and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda is much the same as ENO, except without the water softener. It doesn't fizz up like ENO because the fizz is created from a reaction between the Sodium Carbonate and the Citric Acid.
But I can live with that.
Especially when ENO is about $9 for a small 200g bottle :)
