    Tidemaster,

It is great that we have someone with your expertise on this forum and I am very pleased to discuss the figures with you. At least we might get some sensible answers for a change.

In terms of fuel efficiency, are you stating that the 777 is more fuel efficient than the A380 on a per passenger basis?

I note that the capacity of a Qantas A380 is 450 seats so in the example you have quoted there are 100 empty seats in the A380. I also note that the capacity you have quoted for the 777 is greater than the capacity of the 777-200 and 777-300 used by Singapore Airlines which is roughly 285 seats depending on which configuration. How many seats would Qantas get on a 777 using an A380 like configuration?

Secondly you are comparing the 777 to the a380 but the earlier stated $300m per year fuel saving was for the 747 v 777. If your comparing the 747 v 777 for fuel then you have to factor in the capital costs of replacing the 747 aircraft as they are legacy aircraft. If you want to compare the 777 v a380 then it can be argued they are both "newish" purchases and both require new capital but then there is a debate as to which aircraft is more fuel efficient which appears to hinge on the scenario in which the aircraft is used.

Third, I would be interested in your opinion on the costs of operating the a330 v the 777. Also please explain why the a330 such a poor aircraft?

Are you arguing that Qantas should have purchased the 777 over the a380? Or are you arguing Qantas should have purchased the 777 to replace the remaining 747's? Or are you arguing Qantas should have purchased the 777 instead of the a330? Exactly which aircraft in the fleet should have been replaced by the 777?

What is the true difference in the fuel efficiency of a fully loaded a380 v 777 v a330 v 747 on a per seat basis?

Finally you can do calculations from the financial statements that prove the fuel savings dollars that have been quoted by the unions are impossible. When the unions state stupid numbers that are obviously impossible to achieve they lose all their credibility.
