    1998 is just before the factor of 8 or so increase in gold price.

    And, even so, if it's only dropped 22%, that's not bad. Particularly given the huge number of goldrushes in the 19th century, I wonder how much that added to supply (interesting historical question, must look up).

    And perhaps you would like to tell me which stock in 1801 you would have picked to hold for 200 years? Railways were looking good for a while in the late 1800's Or which bond? Russia would have been looking good. You could have bought Italian bonds. Ooops, Italy didn't exist then.

    Whether it's worth nothing or everything, a lump of gold is still a lump of gold.

    I'm not a gold bug, particularly, though I am medium term bullish. That's just a personal opinion though. And there are quite a few gold stocks I like.
