Agreed, there are a few variables, but there's another one I posted the other day.
100 pounds invested in gold in 1952 (Coronation Year) will give you about 8167 pounds today.
100 pounds invested in stocks in 1952 will give you 108,000 pounds today.
That's from Money.co.uk.
I'me sure you get the general idea, lots of crises since that time and gold still underperforms massively.
