I don't think the Australian Government will allow Qantas to be taken over nor will they allow it to fail. Australia needs it's own national carrier, just like it needs safe secure telecommunications, resources and banks.
The government refused Shell's take over of Woodside, they won't allow the banking 4 pillars to change. The only reason they don't care about Telstra is because they're building another telco NBN.
Shorters of this stock should be careful. If they drive the price down too much they may force the government's hand sooner than later.
