"this tax was ALWAYS about redistributing wealth..now they're giving rebates to uni students...what a joke this govt is"
No having a go at you bonzaboy, just using your quote.
Where do people get the idea that this is wealth distribution? Like we are on some humanitarian quest to help those 'less fortunate' than us.
This is not Socialism. It's out right Capitalism. The Government doesn't actually do anything to earn income besides earning some interest on already collected taxes and the income from some remnant public utilities. It gets it's revenue from taxing goods and services. And when it falls short it makes up a new tax or increases an old one. If volume(people) drops off it increases the unit price(tax) and when volume increases it leaves prices as is, just like a pure and simple Capitalist business.
As to some suggesting revenue goes only to the 'needy'. All I can say is bull crap. If that was true then every payment would be means tested, including the FHOBG, Child care, education(the recent dole out), and others.
The CT's aim is to plug the deficit. I would have felt more comfortable if they said they were going to up the GST a few points and use the revenue to pay off debt and assist the environment. At least my pocket would be dry and urine free...lol
