1)From my experience the options never expired as long as you remained in the employ of the company. But conditions associated with executive options packages vary. Maybe you should call the company and ask the question.

2) by their very nature (and definition), an option gives the holder the right but not the obligation to purchase the underlying security at a pre-determined price (the strike price).

If that were not the case, they would not be options!
