It is not only Gillards fault - there was no border problem when Labor won in 2007 thanks to the Libs Nauru solution - Rudd scrapped that in 2008 which lead to the IEV arrivals increasing from the end of 2009. We must not forget PM Gillard's bizarre policy to build a detention camp on East Timor - without even getting the scheme approved there first. Weird - then she persisted with that so long - for months ?? Malaysia solution - we take 5 for 1 arrival - who dreamt up that great scheme to import Labor voters. Mad. Labor can admit fault and go back to Nauru at any time and the Libs would assist with voting for whatever was reasonable.
But Labor pride prevents that so we have open borders now - I would not be surprised if before the next monsoon season we see larger boats used - say a derelict ex freighter carrying hundreds of people at one go. Who knows - Captain Emad and his fellow shipping agents might be working on this as we write - economy of scale - cheaper tickets - greater profits.
