Last year, I nipped one spam emanating from my niece email account by asking her to delete cookies, etc. The spam stopped, verified by her friends too.
Virus are nasty things, about 5 years ago, I had to delete one nasty trojan horse in one pc which was hidden in the rubbish bin in the system restore area and the trojan horse was introduced through a USB stick.
