Former Wollongong Hawks captain Mat Campbell has joined Gujarat NRE as its new environment and community relations manager.
The move comes just months after Campbell retired from the Wollongong Hawks after 17 seasons with the club.

His new role will include working and consulting the community on a range of issues.

Campbell said he looked forward to working with the company, which was a tremendous supporter of the Illawarra.

‘‘For me this is the best fit post basketball career,” Campbell said.

“Gujarat NRE has been a tremendous supporter of the Illawarra on a variety of levels.

“The last three years I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know Gujarat NRE and what they stand for and I’m very excited to be involved.”

Gujarat NRE Executive chairman Arun Jagatramka described Campbell as a man with special qualities such as his commitment, honesty and dedication to the Wollongong area.

Posted by suss, 5/06/2012 12:25:10 PM, on Illawarra MercuryYep, nice PR. But I would think that the best way to support your local community is to pay the local people who work for you.

Posted by pw, 5/06/2012 1:19:55 PM, on Illawarra MercurySuss is right on the money. Pun intended.

Posted by Once Bitten ..., 5/06/2012 1:30:34 PM, on Illawarra MercuryI can understand a community relations role taking into consideration his prescence in the community - which lets be honest, is a very good one.

But a manager, and taking under his wing the 'Environment' division? So commitment, honesty and dedication are all the quals you need these days to manage in a speciliast field such as environmental sustainability? of a mining company? interesting.

I guess by NRE combining environment & community relations into one role they are in effect saying: hazards to the environment dont matter alsong as the ppl are happy - spin in campbell spin it good!

Posted by Ukey, 5/06/2012 1:50:32 PM, on Illawarra MercuryGujarat NRE are going all in their 'Love Coal' current campaign!
Might be worth mentioning they mine for coking coal, for steelmaking back in India, which no one has a problem with, and their investments in alternative energy back in the state of Gujarat in India!

Posted by Mark from Kiama, 5/06/2012 1:58:06 PM, on Illawarra MercuryThis appointment is a little unusual.

The trend, for some years, has been to give PR and environmental mouthpiece jobs to attractive young females.

Grumpy old blokes tend to treat them more gently in heated public meetings.

bad w(h)ine ozzing from these whinging bloggers. Talk about negative half glass empty Wollongong whingers!!!

Posted by edge, 5/06/2012 3:01:49 PM, on Illawarra MercuryApart from playing basketball what qualifications does he have?, particulalry in the area of the environment. Also begs the question, is this company simply employing him for his name and face to win over public support?

There are actual local people not being paid by this company. But you're right. We should all shut up and smile and clap for the latest press release. Yaaaaaaay.

Posted by pw, 5/06/2012 4:16:51 PM, on Illawarra MercuryCongratulations Matt. All the best.

If you are are trying to get employment in some field the first question is what experience in this field have you ever had?
How refreshing that to be employed as a environment and community relations manager you need to understand how to play a ball game.

We will need to alert the careers advisers to this new learning.

Posted by Igglepiggle, 5/06/2012 9:45:51 PM, on Illawarra MercuryI''m all for NRE giving a boost for employment in the Illawarra, but what would Matt Campbell know about the environment and the effects of longwall mining on the escarpment. Not the smartest move really... If any thing this is reducing and credibility they may have.
