Actually we have probably already reached and passed "peak-renewables" as the government subsidies are no longer affordable and as the reality of how completely unworkable these "greenie-dreams" are for wide scale deployment and how impractical and downright stupid it is to purposely make a large portion of your grid power weather dependent, unreliable and low quality...

As projections of the amount of shale oil and gas vary from several hundred years to even longer, I doubt that gas and oil from these newly availiable and widespread sources will be "transition fuel" except in the fevered imaginations and longings of the fading few green warriors against common sense remaining...

The ongoing Japanese "nuclear disaster" of what degree it may be comes primarily from not upgrading their power plants to latest technology and from deciding to place their nukes close to active earthquake/tsunami zones...

These basic problems seem to have been compounded by outright stupidity in the design process for construction in a zone of possible earthquake-induced tsunami where the cooling ponds and waste rod storage are elevated and the stand-by generators are sites below ground level...

Of course the seeming paralysis by the government in dealing with a disaster of this magnitude has not helped and seems to have magnified in scope of the problem...
