Just to throw a different spanner around....
To me an atheist is just another believer. In this case he believes there is no god, instead of the believers believing there is a god.
As far as I'm concerned, there is no way of proving that a god exists or doesn't exist. The arguments are just mirrors of each other. So I see atheists as just another deist believer. To me agnosticism is the opposite of a believer. I can't see how there is any proof one way or the other.
Having said that, I still some benefit in religion, especially several of them. They attempt within their belief framework to answer the question of who is my neighbour. How should I treat him (and her!). What is a good life. They also provide a sense of satisfaction in their ceremonies that helps one through life even without believing in some of the theology behind them.
