    Imo there are always going to be people that need religion and those that don't and what ever makes a person happy or helps them to get through their day is fine provided it is not imposed on others that do not want it. As for gods, man has always worshipped something be it the sun a volcano or someone or something. My belief is that gods and religion are a creation of man which arose from the harsh reality of life on earth during mans evolution. Imo over time as our intelligence has increased so has the complexity of our gods and religion but that doesn't mean they exist or are any more real than the gods we used to worship e.g. the Sun, which we now know is a star consisting of hydrogen etc.

    Anyway, this thread may be totally irrelevant by next week when more than 700 high-powered physicists gather in Melbourne for their two-yearly conference amid feverish speculation that the almost mythical sub-atomic particle that gives the universe its mass - the Higgs boson or so-called "God particle'' - has been found.
