Wars a bit different, who cares if someone's nice to you when they kill you humanely.
The old infantry motto (not exact words) is to kill or capture the enemy, to seize or defend ground, etc etc etc.
You don't kill the enemy because you dislike him, you kill the enemy so he doesn't kill your buddy, or the guy in the other foxhole.
This is why this German pilot made the wrong call.
