Maz if its any consolation in areas in the south of england you can get 5-7% yields and with buy to let mortgages at about 4% but require 40% deposit. Very different to oz in that respect as buy to let and owner occupier are very different rates and conditions.
In london i had a bidding war with my property there and had a 15% increase in my rent within one year. Property values in most good parts of london are well over the 2007 peaks.
If you have a read what the ex bank of england gov had to state about 2 weeks ago you would put your money on housing in the uk just due to the population growth and the lack of housing being built due to banks not funding building firms.
Interestingly if i was investing any more i certainly would be putting money into the uk before australia and that is just my opinion as i see no growth here for years in housing prices.
