is simple, do not buy, stay renting

here is a little story, that can be related to people, and how they are raised...everyone is different, some households are very different to others...
some parents are leaders , go getters, adventureres,
others are the opposite...
some siblings are a mirror of their parents, others escape and lead an opposite life

and in the following example, they treat their animals to lead or live in their life.....

I have a small dog, I have had her since she was a puppy, she is very clever, does tricks, loves playing games, is out there, with a gregarious character....full of life, is interested in almost everything, she experiments, investigates...is very aware of every sound, movement, etc

I also have a little rescue dog, similar breed, same age....
he does not know how to play games, knows no commands, is listless and not interested in anything....
he is well behaved, but leads a boring life, just follows me everywhere, sits at my feet....

he is now learning different things, by following No 1 dog around, he is learning to play, and trying to imitate her,

he appears to be much happier, he is doing a possum patrol now, and appears to enjoy his new found responsibility.....and his new life, of being interested, and also pampered....
he is also being challenged, and appears to be happy and thriving in his new environment

so you can teach old dogs, new tricks
