People from different parts of Indonesia can be quite dissimilar in appearance and race. Javanese are quite different from the Dayaks of Borneo, Javanese have Dutch and Arab hybrid groupings and the fuzzy wuzzys from Irian Jaya are needless to say, racially different.
Indonesia happened after the war because colonial interferers deemed that 13,000 islands full of disparate races and religions needed a critical mass to exist as a nation. Multiculturalism was needed to allow these disparate groups to co-exist but instead a central Javanese adminstration mimicking the Dutch colonial regime was established. This Javanese regime required extreme repression to hold power.
The East Timorese are another hybrid of European and Malay races, so not the same as Javanese at all.
