I recall reading some months ago that Xstrata will mine under the smelter upon decommissioning. There has been quite a lot of talk of legal action against Xstrata in relation of high levels of lead in children in MtIsa but Xstrata's decision to close the smelter has been put as being on economic grounds.

Xstrata has undertaken the upgrade of Ernest Henry so obviously intends to remain a copper producer in the MtIsa region. It also did a deal with EXCO in recent times and possibly will do one with Altona. A decision on its Townsville refinery has not been confirmed.
