Over the last number of years every time yet another of our civil liberties is violated in law, there always seems to be someone ready to mindlessly quote that old cliche to me "If you're not doing the wrong thing then you have nothing to worry about"......
That statement has so many holes in it that I don't know where to begin. I mean who gets to decide what "the wrong thing" is. If someone who is far more powerful than I decides I am not serving their interests as they think I should it could be decided that I am doing "the wrong thing". And if you think this is a cynical perspective then think about the plight of Peter Slipper or Mal Coulson. Yes, it would be easy to say they did "the wrong thing" and they got what they deserved but they were both doing "the wrong thing" for years and a blind eye was turned ....... it was only when their actions were no longer aligned with those of their former masters that "justice" was served on them for doing "the wrong thing".
So my biggest problem is not so much WHAT purpose but rather WHOSE purpose will this legislation be used.
