As it turns out it was by using a rewards card with Woolworths that a record of my shopping purchases and habits is retained.

You didn't read the fine print. You don't have to use the rewards card if you want to protect your privacy.

Another example is Google ads that record your internet activity and places target advertising on websites you visit.

Again this is not mandatory, you can prevent this from happening if you so choose.

    HC also records your IP.

You can hide your IP address from HC if you so desire. You are free to not use Hotcopper if you choose not to.

This argument is completely different, this is mandatory recording of your actions. It is unwarranted and unnecessary and a gross attack on innocent people's privacy and rights. Remember at one stage the Labor government wanted to control what people were allowed to access on the Internet. This is their alternative way of getting to their desire. Since when were people presumed guilty until proven innocent? If police have suspects then they do their job and find and provide the evidence. This whole topic of discussion is very very worrying.
