I think that you are right on the money:

There was a time not that long ago(in geological terms lol)where there was a lot more biff amongst blokes but it was a lot less vicious and the usual code applied ie. no weapons, no mates joining in, no kicking on the ground etc. There was a sense of honour and cowardice and the right thing to do. Where that went is an interesting question. There can be all the laws in the world but if people have no idea of what a cowardly act is then they mean nothing.
